Looking to hire a web designer? Make sure you ask these questions first!
As a “seasoned” (not old, lol) website designer that specializes in SEO, I have a lot of clients who hired designers based solely on price and end up hiring me to fix their site or optimize it so they can rank. Don’t get me wrong, I make a good income optimizing sites, but I remember when I was first starting out, every penny mattered and knowing what to look for will save you a boatload of pennies. So here you go.
#1. SEO really does matter. A beautiful site is just a beautiful site if no one can find you. A good web developer will build with SEO in mind from the beginning. If your site isn’t built well, you will pay more money, in the long run, to rank for your keywords. How do you know if the developer knows their SEO? Test their website. https://gtmetrix.com/ is free and fast and gives the best picture of whether or not a developer knows their stuff. If their site isn’t optimized, chances are yours won’t be either. Site speed is a ranking factor.
a.) What steps do they take to ensure that your site is built with SEO in mind?
b.) What plugins do they recommend for SEO and optimization? Do they know how to configure them?
#2. Ask the right questions –
a.) What hosting company/plan do they suggest? Who do they use? Back to the optimization….Hosting really does matter and a good designer will have advice and be able to explain the difference between a shared hosting plan and a VPS (not much price difference, but huge optimization difference.)
b.) What do they do if your site goes down? How would they fix it? Do they know their way around a c-panel? Building a site is one thing, but knowing how it’s built and how to fix any issues that may arise is another.
c.) What themes do they recommend? Why? Will you be able to easily make updates with that theme?
d.) What platforms do they use to test your site when it’s completed to ensure that everything is working well and there are no technical issues? They should be able to provide you with a technical analysis report showing that there are no 4xx or 5xx error codes.
e.) Will your site be set up with Google Analytics, Google webmaster, and Bing webmaster?
f.) Do they provide backups and tutorials for you?
Those are the basics and of course, they should have a portfolio of sites they’ve built, and you should like what you see.
A website is your brand, your first impression, and a well-built website is the most inexpensive way to advertise because you will rank organically. A website that is built with SEO in mind will save you a ton of time and money…..and frustration. It will also be beautiful
